It does seem plausible that the ship lost power, as there are apparently reports that the ship was seen drifting before it ran on to the reef.

Land based photos also indicate strong onshore winds, which would have pushed against Manawanui’s tall surface area like a sail into the reef.

Usually when a power outage occurs, the anchors are dropped to secure the vessel - but the coastal waters around the island are very deep, preventing this measure leaving the Manawanui adrift and at the mercy of the wind & waves.

If this was the case, it would have given the crew very little time to save the ship
