Before Bolsheviks came to power in Armenia in 1920s, family name of my ancestors was Ter-Margaryan, but later it got changed to Margaryan. There are two explanations that I know of why it happened:
- Bolsheviks were atheists who throughout the years of Soviet Union attacked church numerous times.
The person after whom the family name became Ter-Margaryan was a known priest in surrounding villages.
- Bolshevik’s policies against rich people.
My great-grandfather’s brother was Gaspar Ter-Margaryan who lost whatever he owned and fled to France to avoid further persecutions.
I wonder how other families kept the prefix “Ter” in their family name.
