The Linux journey has been interesting for me. Coming from nothing but Windows, ever since I was a kid, and moving over to Linux was a bit scary. Having completed college and starting a new career, I needed to be sure that I planned correctly.
However, after reading here and other Linux and distro subs, I certainly felt better about making the change. If I learned anything, it was to test out first via VMs to find the combination of distro and DE.
- So if there is anyone else thinking about making the jump, make sure you try things out.
- Learn the difference between the desktop environment and the distro. They are not one and the same, and different combinations will fit what you want better.
- Learn the strengths and weaknesses of each distro and how it fits. Learn the difference between LTS, rolling, and everything between.
- Understand that hardware matters, and research a bit to plan for potential problems.
- Follow guides
- Understand that while one person thinks distro X is the best, it does not mean you will like it and that is ok.
I tried, Ubuntu, Mint, Zorin, Arch (btw), openSUSE, Endeavor, and others. I settled on Fedora Workstation as it just felt right for me. I researched and found out how to add the non-free things I needed for my work and the software. I installed on a separate NVME so I could switch easily between Windows and Linux, although as of now I have not been back on Windows for over a month. I have not found a need yet.
