Millie Perkins as Anne Frank in “The Diary of Anne Frank” is a good example. George Stevens made an exceptional film, with some scenes so brilliant shot that they are unforgettable like the attic scene of Anne and Frank doing the laundry, but Millie Perkins as Anne is unbelievably bad. This isn’t just a mediocre performance, this was a performance that is downright amauterish, literally no emotion in almost every line she says. She was Ali MacGraw bad. And it ruined the movie for me because I couldn’t get over it. As superb as the supporting actors were, Shellley Winters even won an Oscar, Perkins made it impossible for the movie to rise above its flawed central casting.
“House of Gucci” is not a great great movie but it would be taken seriously if Jared Leto didn’t play his role like he was auditioning for Super Mario Bros. The worst part, the real person didn’t act that way but Leto thought a Italian caricature would be showier.
