So I (32f) went out with my best friend Shireen (28f) and some other friends to a club this past Sunday. I was free to do so because my husband is visiting relatives in India and the kids went with him. To me it’s just about having fun with my friends and when Shireen leaves us to go hang out with a boy who meets us there, it’s no biggie. I can tell he’s younger but that’s all.

When Shireen calls me over she introduces the boy to me as Arji but right when he notices me he’s nervous, scared and muttering (IN A CLUB). She has me company while she goes to the bathroom but as soon as she’s gone he just screams out “Massi, don’t you recognize me?” (Massi is mother’s sister in Punjabi). And things click in my head and I realize Arji = my nephew Arjun. Before I could talk, he just said “Please, don’t tell Nani Ji you saw me here” and left (Nani is mother’s mother).

Shireen got pissed when I told her what happened and it turns out she met Arjun weeks ago and they like each other even though he’s four years younger. She got mad at me for not recognizing my own nephew and thinks things might not go further with him because of me. I pointed out that I haven’t seen him or his mother in person since he was fourteen. She said I have no excuse because I’ve seen pictures of him. She hasn’t talked at all in our group chats since then, so tell me, was I the asshole in this instance?
