Hi /r/Guildwars

Earlier this week after support from this community we set this subreddit to Private and joined the Reddit Blackout in protest to the changes to Reddit API and the knock-on effect to 3rd-party Apps that many Reddit users use.

It was not communicated to members here that our Blackout would go on longer than the 2 days (June 12-13) originally proposed as part of this protest. Therefore we are re-opening the subreddit to allow people to share their opinions.

While the Blackout did gain media attention and forced Reddit into making some more announcements they didn’t go the way that users wanted.

Blackouts are still on-going but subreddits and communities are now making their own decisions on what to do next. Depending on how this community responds may change how we move forward.

For now keeping the subreddit closed without clearly communicating to you all hurts our community more than it helps the cause against Reddit.

Why did we do this?

A glance at our subreddit insights shows that approx. 50% of views to /r/Guildwars are on Android or iOS and this change will kill off great 3rd-party Apps that I’m sure many find better than Reddit’s offering.

Future Actions

For anyone who thinks we should remain Private, that can be discussed in this thread. If you would like us to run a poll, be read-only, these are all options.

If anyone chooses to stop using Reddit there are other place you can join the general Guild Wars community:

    • Guild Wars Global Discord is a place for everyone to talk about GW and is already an established extension of this subreddit.
    • Guild Wars Legacy is an independent forum for GW fans.
