On the night of the 22nd, the Iwakuni Kintaikyo Airport, which is used by both the US military and civilians in Iwakuni, Yamaguchi Prefecture, received a report that “several drones had entered,” temporarily blocking the runway. This resulted in the delay of an All Nippon Airways flight bound for the airport by about three hours.
According to All Nippon Airways and other sources, at around 7pm on the 22nd, ANA received a call from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism office informing them that “multiple drones had entered” Iwakuni Kintaikyo Airport, which is jointly used by the US military and civilians in Iwakuni City, and the runway was temporarily unavailable.
As a result, an All Nippon Airways flight heading to the airport from Haneda Airport was unable to land, and after waiting in the air, it changed its destination to refuel and landed at Hiroshima Airport.
As the runway resumed operation just after 8pm, the flight headed to Iwakuni Kintaikyo Airport and arrived about three hours later than originally scheduled.
As a result, the return flight to Haneda Airport was also delayed by about three hours, affecting a total of about 250 passengers on both flights.
Police are currently investigating the details of the incident, including whether a drone was flying.
