My cousin Susan and I both have toddlers who are the same age five or take a month.

My family travels relatively much more frequently than Susan’s family does. She mentioned a couple of months ago that she was thinking of visiting my city as a family holiday.

Honestly I didn’t pay much attention because she and her husband have said the same thing for over 5 years.

Anyway yesterday I saw her for coffee and she told me all excited that she’s booked flights for her family on the same flight I’m taking with my husband and baby when we return home.

Why? Because it’s an 8 hour international flight and as a seasoned traveller I can help her settle and occupy their baby on the flight. I told her that wasn’t going to happen. We choose night flights so that we all sleep, and the morning we land my baby will go to daycare and husband and I will be working. So we need the rest. She laughed it off like I was joking.

I called my husband as soon as I left Susan and told him and asked him to change our flights. He did so now we travel on a Saturday instead of a Friday.

I messaged Susan and told her that following our coffee I have changed my flights and while I’d love to host her at our home, I just couldn’t be her airside babysitter.

Now Susan is mad at me for abandoning her and not wanting to help my niece and give them the benefit of our experience
