Trent Baalke got to ride the coattails of the Jim Harbaugh era in San Francisco to some decent records and playoff success. But when it finally came to hiring his own guys? Let’s see what he brought to the table.
Doug Pederson 22-29 (.431) 2022-24
Yep, you saw that correctly. Trent Baalke, in terms of hiring head coaches, has been at his peak with his latest hire. How does this compare to the other hires at the time? Well… better than you think. The 2022 head coach hiring class was truly a class of all time, with the following coaches hired: Lovie Smith, Matt Eberflus, Brian Daboll, Kevin O’Conell (hey a good one!), Mike McDaniel, Nathaniel Hackett, Dennis Allen, Josh McDaniels, Todd Bowles. So, could’ve been better, but certainly could have been worse. Again, this is the PEAK of Baalke, and second place is gonna show you how awful it’s been.
Jim Tomsula 5-11 (.313) 2015
No, your eyes are not broken. The Aqua Teen Hunger Force head coach was the “second best” head coaching hire Baalke has made in his career in terms of record. Granted, the owner did not help the search for this coach at all with firing Harbaugh after one “bad season” after 4 years of success. But let’s compare this hire to the rest of the league hires in 2015 for fun! Gary Kubiak, Jack Del Rio, John Fox, Todd Bowles (again lmao), Rex Ryan. Again, not a great class of head coaches. But, Tomsula was truly one of the worst hires in 2015, as everyone knew he was out the door before the season had even begun. And now we move on to the truly disgusting hires.
Urban Meyer 2-11 (.154) 2021 (didn’t even finish the season)
I think this head coaching hire speaks for itself. You know it’s one of the worst hires ever in the NFL when Shad Khan, AN OWNER KNOWN FOR BEING OK WITH LOSING AND DOING NOTHING ABOUT IT, has to step in DURING THE SEASON to get rid of your guy. Let’s compare it to the other 2021 hires: Brandon Staley (oh god damn it I new id be self harming making this post somehow), Nick Sirriani, Dan Campbell, Arthur Smith, David Culley, Robert Saleh (who they’re now desperate to get this offseason lol). A head coaching class that had some true home runs, some mehs, and some duds. And Baalke managed to pick the dud buried 20 feet below a pile of shit.
So there you have it, Baalke’s head coaching hire resume in its entire-…. Huh?..… what? …. No…. There’s another?! SOMEONE WORSE?!
Chip Kelly 2–14 (.125) 2016
Oh my god. I think this season was so bad, that it was deleted from a lot of NFL fans memories. I almost forgot Chip Kelly was a head coach for the 49ers. Urban Meyer might have been the most chaotic bad hire, but this one is special too. This season made Jed York, a previously arrogant, meddling, young money owner who refused to believe he was wrong, MADE THAT OWNER… change his entire being. Baalke’s head coaching hire of Chip Kelly broke Jed York. The next regime at the 49ers was entirely more hands off from ownership, hiring Shanahan, and the rest has been relatively successful history for them. Let’s see who Baalke could’ve hired in 2016 besides Chip Kelly: Hue Jackson, Adam Gase, Ben Mcadoo, Doug Pederson, Dirk Koetter. Oh. Yikes. Truly a horrible drafting class, and Baalke chose the 2nd worst option (Hue Jackson is the worst coach of all time, great job dodging that I guess).
So, I’ll end this post of sad statistical facts with a plea. Khan. Please. Please please please PLEASE. Fire Baalke. I’m not even a Jags fan. I root for the fucking chargers. I’m probably one of the few team fans in the league that actively wishes for bad things to happen to the Jags (27-0…. shudder) and yet it is so abysmally awful from a watching perspective, that I don’t want Baalke to be a GM anymore. Please. Fire him. Or if you’re not going to fire him, at least do the exact opposite of what he says to do for head coaching hires.
