As someone who was quite skeptical of the Apple Vision Pro going in, I was pretty enamored by the hardware and Apple not compromising their long term goals of the product trying to meet a more reasonable cost. They’ve done a lot to redeem high fidelity VR/AR that Meta/Facebook has seemed to kill.
Post an IMAX 70MM film viewing of Oppenheimer with sequences in 1.43:1 aspect ratio, I’ve been thinking about what the Apple Vision Pro and related products could mean for the entertainment industry. The sheer height and size of the image immersed me in a way that has stayed with me for more than a week (I’ll say I’m not a film purist, and I assume a dual laser imax image would immerse me in the same way). Most filmmakers can’t explore this when all televisions are 16:9.
Apple Vision Pro (and forthcoming more affordable headsets) could expand these kinds of experiences in a way that could expand so many filmmakers’ creative visions. Nolan’s movies shown in 1.43:1, Cameron’s in HFR 3D, and Innaritu able to explore ideas like he did in Carne y Arena.
If you build it they will come.
