A couple of days ago, I posted on this subreddit that I noticed that app launching in Fedora was half a second or more slower on Fedora than Arch and openSUSE Tumbleweed. System startup is also slower, but that’s another topic, I guess.
The culprit that was responsible for the slowdowns was TuneD. As you know with Fedora 41, power-profiles-daemon got replaced by TuneD. I have a desktop with AMD 3400G with 16 GB ram system (also SSD). TuneD by default chose Balanced power profile for me. When Balanced is selected, it causes a delay in app launching. Even some animations are slowed down due to this. When some background activity was going on, launching Firefox also took a big hit. Of course, I knew and saw that Balanced mode was selected by TuneD by I expected it to not degrade the performance on a desktop machine. On Windows, for example, my power management tool is also set to Balanced by default, but it doesn’t cause any performance issues. It’s smart enough to work differently on desktops vs laptops. It’s the same for Power Profiles Daemon on Linux.
These app launching issues on Fedora go away when I select the Performance power profile in KDE power management aka throughput-performance in TuneD. I also verified it in Arch Linux. Tuned on its default Balanced mode takes the same performance hit on Arch.
I don’t know if Tuned at the moment behaves the same way on every desktop. But the TuneD team needs to have a look at this and fix it at least on desktops similar to my config.
