General Season Review
I think I could go on all day about the ups and downs of this season. About Coach Tomlin’s tenure and the playoff thing. But the general tenor of Steeler’s Nation to end this season was somber.
10-3. Beat the Commies and Ravens in back-to-back weeks after the bye. Two really good teams who made it to at least the divisional round of the playoffs, which is when I am writing this. There were legitimate hopes and discussions of AFC North titles being had. There were even some preemptive discussions about 1st seed potential after the Bills beat the Chiefs in Week 11. I don’t care what your roster or QB situation is, if you are 10-3 your team is good.
But then… they hit the real gauntlet. I mean it is kind of insane how the NFL arranged the Steelers’ schedule this year. Week 9 Bye is fine, not too early at all. But then all six divisional games between weeks 11 and 18?? And squeeze in @Commanders, @Philly, vs. Chiefs in between all of those games and you’ve got an insanely tough second half of the season. But the schedule is the schedule. Gotta win your games, no matter how they’re arranged.
Somethings gotta give. Yes the Steelers did the very un-Steelers thing last Spring and moved on from a 1st round draft bust in Kenny Pickett earlier than they normally would. That was a good move because generally you know whether or not a guys “got it”. Going and getting Russ and Fields was good given what was available. The draft overall was good. The free agents were mostly good additions. New offensive staff to change things up after Matt Canada’s sorry ass. Anddddddddd they ended a few games over .500 and got bounced in the playoffs after a late seasons skid….again.
Nowhere worse than the middle. No roster position worse than without a future at QB. Too good to get a blue chip type pick, not good enough to get a division, or conference title.
Sucks.
Go Steelers.
2024 Off-Season
2024 Draft:
- Round 1, Pick 20 overall: Troy Fautanu, OT, Washington : Gotta get healthy before we evaluate this guy, but he had a nice spring and summer before his injury it sounded like.
- Round 2, Pick 51: Zach Frazier, C, West Virginia : An awesome addition after a couple years middling around struggling in replacing Maurkice Pouncey.
- Round 2, Pick 84: Roman Wilson, WR, Michigan : redshirt year.
- Round 3, Pick 98: Payton Wilson, ILB, NC State : had injury concerns coming out, and eased in rotating with ERob, but man he is an awesome pair with Patrick Queen. Kid has an exciting future.
- Round 4, Pick 119: Mason McCormick, OG, South Dakota St. : All in all a positive year for a 4th round rookie starting out of an FCS school.
- Round 7, Pick 178: Logan Lee, DL, Iowa : depth and rotation piece
- Round 7, Pick 195: Ryan Watts, S, Texas : : depth and rotation piece
Free Agency:
- Russell Wilson, QB, Broncos: $1.2mm/1 yr : meh when it was rumored, excited when it was good, and back to meh now.
- Cameron Johnston, P, Texans: $9mm/3 yrs : broke his leg in half early, but was good before that little incident.
- Patrick Queen, ILB, Ravens: $41mm/3 yrs : I liked the signing after much instability at the ILB position the last six or seven years. Still like it now and if Payton Wilson can come on more next year it could free Queen up to do a lot more.
- DeShon Elliot, S, Dolphins: $6mm/2 yrs : the best addition of this group. He’s a starter at S alongside Minkah. A real threat against the run and pass. A tone setter type of guy. Love to have him and love his attitude on and off the field.
- Van Jefferson, WR, Falcons/Rams: $1.3mm/1 yrs : Dude’s divisive. I agree he was overused, but he’s a legit pro. Does all the dirty work, doesn’t sandbag plays that are away from him, and seems like a genuinely good dude. I think that’s valuable in an extremely young offense that has had its share of immaturity. Sometimes just having someone show you how it’s done is good to keep around.
- Cordarelle Patterson, KR/RB, Falcons: $6mm/2 yrs : solid changeup for Naj/Jaylen before injury, bad and overused after.
- Dean Lowry, DL, Vikings: $5mm/2 yrs : Depth. Took 15% of the snaps on defense. Just depth.
- Kyle Allen, QB, Buccaneers: $1.3mm/1 yrs : Emergency QB. Nothing of note here.

- March 16, 2024: Traded a conditional 2025 pick (6th round, converts to 4th round if Fields plays 51% of 2024 snaps, he didn’t) to Bears for Justin Fields, QB.

High Points:
- Dumping Kenny after only two seasons was both unexpected and welcomed by most. An uncommon move for the Steelers, who love to give guys time to grow. Glad they displayed some urgency and cut bait. And now he’s going to lose his BACKUP job to Tanner McKee. Maybe try throwing more than .6 TDs per game dude. It also helps that Kenny just isn’t a competitor and opted to not have a camp competition with Russ. Soft as baby shit.
- Being 6-2 at the bye, even with a QB switch! Fields was 4-2 and then they go to Russ against both New York teams right before the bye.
- Beating the Ravens and Commies back-to-back weeks was nice. Felt good. Felt like things a real team does. They beat good teams.
- Any time you saw Cam Heyward bully an OL with ONE ARM and just hit a dude with another dude.
- Any time Pickens was actively being thrown the ball felt good
Low Points
- Any time Pickens wasn’t being actively thrown the ball felt bad.
- I think losing five straight to end your season is a pretty lowwwwww low point.
- Another one and done playoff appearance.
Low Points for Yinzers
- Every day that Mike Tomlin isn’t fired by the Steelers.
- If George Pickens showed any emotions on the sidelines or twitter or whatever that wasn’t the typical PR, canned statements of “work hard, steelers football”
- Every day that Teryl Austin isn’t fired by the Steelers.
- Every day that Pat Meyer (OL Coach) isn’t fired by the Steelers.
- Every day that Cam Sutton isn’t fired by the Steelers. (agreed with this one)
High Points for Yinzers
- I unironically believe some of them prayed for a skid to end the year and an early playoff exit hoping that it would finally result in the firing of the worst (in their eyes) good coach ever.
Low Points for Fields Truthers:
- Benched
High Points for Fields Truthers:
- How Russ played to finish the season
Overall Roster Review
All-Pros:
- Cameron Heyward, Old Man (1st Team): I don’t know if he’s the oldest DL/DT to be selected to a AP1 team, but god damn he is so good. I love Cam, and hope he can play until he’s 50. ELEVEN pass deflections. Just insane. To emphasize how crazy this stat is, there were 34 players in the league this year with 11 or more PBUs. Cam Heyward is the only one on the list who is **no…
