Last night my boyfriend of one year read my diary while I was in the bathroom. He dug through my bedside table to find it and read the latest entry, which was a vent session about him I wrote about a month ago. I compared him to how I felt with my ex. I said mean things. But it was never meant for him to see. It was my innermost, private and personal thoughts that I needed to get out. My therapist had suggested I journal so that’s why I did it.
I asked him why he read it. He said he was convinced I was cheating on him and was looking for proof. He apologized for reading it but then later said “he didn’t mean to read it.” I apologized for the mean things I said in the journal and told him I wished he never had to see that.
How should I proceed? I honestly really care about him, but it seems like he’s trying to minimize what he did and I think what he read will affect our relationship. How can we have a productive talk about this?
TL;DR: Last night my boyfriend of one year read my diary while I was in the bathroom. I had written a very negative vent session about him. He’s upset and so am I. How should I proceed?
