I worked in retail for years, and I lived with a roommate who also worked in retail for years. She’s significantly older than me, about 10 years, but she’s like a sister.

Anyways, I was in line to do a return at a store and she was standing with me, she had nothing with her when she walked with me to the counter. I was finishing my return and she wandered pretty far off to the side, not in an impulse section or anything, to look at hair clips.

I finished my transaction, walked through the exit, and she had picked up a hair clip, and tried to walk back THROUGH the exit, despite other people cued up (at like 5 or 6) to buy the item. I had completely finished my return, and we were no longer at the counter. She basically just walked back to the counter, cutting the next person off, expecting to pay for the clip. I like, immediately said hey man what are you doing ? And she just blankly said she was going after me, because she had waited with me. I told her she was clearly cutting in line (not rudely or loudly, this was a very quiet exchange) and I had no issues waiting in line with her again. She got SO mad, and said I had COMPLETELY embarrassed her, and she had every right to check out in front of everyone else. Basically, saying I was so disrespectful to her and she worked in retail too and this was totally fine.

At the time I was obviously still working in retail, knowing FULL well when customers did this it bothered me and I would tell them to wait in line.

Can someone tell me, is this like a generational thing? Or is it like a gen Z thing to think this is super rude ? Just want to see what the majority of people think because it’s been icking me out.
