About 4 years ago, I had attended my first real party post-covid lockdowns. It was here I had seen a longtime friend of mine for the first time in a while, and alongside her in tow was her fiance, whom I’d meet for the first time. He seemed like a pretty normal guy, standard hobbies, respectable job, that sort of stuff. The party came and went, and a couple of weeks later, my friend invited me to a different party at her house.

This was a pretty laid-back event, we just chatted, smoked a bit of weed, the usual stuff a group of young adults do. But only 2 months after this party, the same friend reached out to me because of a serious issue that had just occurred in their relationship. Her fiance and her parents had always hated each other, and they had gotten into a heated argument. By the end of it, fiancé had lost his temper and stormed out of the house, keying her mom’s car on his way out. They noticed the damage immediately and captured the whole thing on a household security camera. Ultimately, parents agreed not to press charges on the condition that he paid for the damages. Not long after, my friend called off the engagement completely. None of us could have predicted how this incident was, in retrospect, a first look into violent tendencies from him.

Fast forward a few years and life had seemingly moved on. She started dating someone new, but her ex had seemingly dropped off the grid. His social medias had been deleted and no one could reach him by phone. I didn’t know what had happened to the guy, but I wasn’t very close to him, so I also kind of didn’t care. But a little while ago, this same friend had shared a news article to her Facebook. The headline read “man arrested for assaulting family member”. She added, “holy shit, this was my ex”.

Apparently, after their engagement was called off, he moved back home with some unknown relative. I presume it may have been his uncle or his father. But regardless, he and this relative had also been having loud, heated arguments, and police had already been called to the house a couple of times before. The relative said he was beginning to fear for his own safety and was attempting to evict and get a restraining order. The following is from the day the assault occurred, as the events took place:

  • another argument occurred
  • ex-fiance grabbed a tire iron and began striking the relative with it, landing a presumed total of about 16 hits over the span of 40 minutes
  • ex-fiance had also stomped on the victim’s head when the physical blows knocked him to the ground
  • after the attack, ex had stolen the victim’s car and fled the scene in it
  • police & EMTs arrive, transport victim to the hospital and put a warrant out for ex’s arrest
  • ex flees the county where the crime occurred and drove about 2 or 3 hours away
  • a state trooper finds ex & makes contact, arresting him without incident
  • ex is brought back up to his home county’s jail, where he’s booked on charges of aggravated assault, false imprisonment, theft, and most notably, attempted murder. His bond is set at $100k.

Just frightening to think how that could have easily been my friend in this situation. I am grateful every day that she was not harmed and dumped him when she did.
