I would love to see an anime take on a western. Not a space western or far-future/alien wester like Cowboy Bebop or Trigun, but an actual mid-1800s Old West western, with horses, saloons, mining towns, cowboys and revolvers, the whole deal. Could be played straight up and tell a serious western story, could add some kind of fantasy or supernatural element to it, who knows. But having an anime in the old west would be damn interesting to me. I get the impression that it’s not the most popular or well known setting or genre in Japan, most non-Japan settings in anime tend to be either space or some form of Renaissance/Medieval Europe. But Baccano did get made, and that’s early 20th century America, which definitely isn’t common in anime either, so I suppose it is possible someone could do it.

What about you? What’s a mostly untapped or obscure setting or genre you’d like to see explored in anime?
