I was surprised to learn that The Truman Show has originally been conceived as a psychological thriller with Robin Williams and Dennis Hopper (who actually showed up to set and filmed a bit) before it became the movie we currently know.
Now I must ask: what are some other movies that started off as completely different projects?
A few more examples off the top of my head include:
• Die Hard 3 being a movie called “Simon Says” and Die Hard 4 being a movie called “WW3.com”
• The Cable Guy being a Buddy comedy with Chris Farley and David Spade
• The Lawnmower Man being a Sci Fi script before being turned into a “Stephen King” adaptation that Stephen King himself disowned
• Tales From The Darkside being Creepshow 3 before becoming a separate anthology horror movie.
• Live action Scooby Doo originally being a PG-13 parody movie
• The first Final Destination was meant to be an X-Files spin-off
