I discovered a mallard duck nest in my yard today, tucked under some bushes! I’ve been spotting a pair of ducks around the yard over the past week and had a feeling there might be a nest nearby — and sure enough, she chose my yard! I feel so honoured! I’ve done my due diligence and researched what to do about the nest (nothing, don’t even touch it and leave the area alone if possible).
The mama duck comes and goes (I think she’s still in the laying phase and hasn’t started full incubation yet), but I’m starting to worry because once the eggs hatch (if they hatch fingers crossed), the ducklings will need to get to water — and the nearest storm pond is across a very busy road in our residential neighbourhood.
Should I contact someone like a local conservation office when they hatch? Or is it best to let nature take its course? I’m just so concerned for their safety. :(
