Just wanted to get some thoughts, how do people look at it when they’re riding a bike on MUP’s (mixed use or multi use path for bike riding, walking, running etc) that terminate for no reason and then start up again and then terminate again? Like riding northbound on Rabbit Hill Road, there is a MUP for most of it until you hit Terwillegar bvld/ Mactaggart Dr. Then it turns into a sidewalk for a long stretch. Than a MUP appears again and disappears. Same with most of 23 ave which has a MUP for most of it but not for the stretch between Rabbit Hill Road edit: 119 street and 111 street. Or 82 street north of 153ave has MUP and then it seems to terminate.
Even the recent accident that happened on 63 ave and Gateway. A block away there is a MUP that starts on 65 Ave and Gateway. So I know there are some turn in/off challenges when riding on a sidewalk but what would be the difference in riding on the sidewalk early before getting to that 65 ave MUP?
All these examples, the MUP seems to terminate to sidewalks and there’s really no change in pedestrian traffic And they’re often along busy roads which makes many riders uncomfortable to ride on. Likely just dated infrastructure and not a high priority to properly change to MUP? There’s loads of examples in the city. So what do people do? Just continue as if its a MUP? Avoid these routes? Switch back and forth? Curious to see how people plan their routes here and balance using common sense vs the law. And often these sidewalks are very light on pedestrian traffic and there’s often ample room to ride on the grass around people if needed.
