I drove my son to school this morning and passed by many kids riding their bikes to school. Not one was wearing a helmet. This includes elementary and junior high kids. Not only is a bike helmet mandatory but it can save their life. Parents constantly complain about how drivers drive through school zones/neighborhoods then send their kids out without helmets. Do you let your kids ride in the car without a seatbelt? No. And I get it, kids think helmets aren’t cool. No helmet cause you’re too cool? Then I guess you walk to school. Years ago I hit a 15 year old kid who was riding his bike and ran a stop sign. He wasn’t wearing a helmet. He landed on the hood of my car, his body smashed my windshield so hard it pulled away from the frame, and he rolled off the front of my car onto the pavement. My first thought was I killed someone’s kid. It was pure luck that he didn’t hit his head, which is exactly what the cop said to him. He had some broken bones but thankfully not his skull. Don’t send your kids out hoping they will be lucky because in most car vs bike accidents they aren’t.
