I went on a big budget app tour when YNAB hiked their prices (it’s too much after the exchange rate for me). I remember liking Buckets, but it didn’t work for me long-term because I need an app to check my budget on the go.
I eventually ended up back at YNAB. One year later and I didn’t want to renew with YNAB if I could avoid it, the cost is just too high when I don’t use any of the new products and services that they’re rolling out (and the reason for which they charge so much). I manually import account files from my bank, only use the iOS app to check my budget, and don’t depend on any other features.
As I was doing a last minute hunt to see if there was an alternative, I’m glad I stumbled upon Buckets again because I see an iOS app is in the works! I also see that there are semi-regular updates and the app is actively being worked on (unlike Actual and Mvelopes which have been sunseted) - so I immediately purchased a license.
I am hopeful that these new updates will keep me from having to depend on YNAB’s app anymore. When you’re new to Zero Based Budgeting/Envelope budgeting YNAB is an incredible tool and definitely worth paying for. But when you’ve been using the method for many years, you’re paying a ton of money for a spreadsheet. I’m happy to pay for an app and all the work that goes into it, but I don’t think I am getting that with YNAB.
Anyways, happy to be back!
