I log into Dota 2 after work and select position 4 in ranked role queue. My brain is huge and after watching Jerax’s TI8 & TI9 highlights for the 11th time, I’m ready to make some crazy rotation plays. I finally find a game and the countdown starts. All my teammates are waiting for my pick and I know what they are thinking:

“Will this guy actually play a support or is he just going to pick carry hoodwink?” I pick WR because I need 2.45mm more focus fire damage to unlock the second arcana style and I’m ready to land some game winning shackles.

In game time: -0.30s, our entire team is smoked around the enemy bounty rune, but there is no one there because the enemy team did the exact same thing. As we attempt to secure the enemy river bounty, I hear a voice from the darkness “look at it go”. I see my teammates are stunned playing hot potato while WD grabs the 3rd of 4 bounty runes and slowly walks away. The entire team chases the pings to the mid-tier 1, only to realize he got away with it. The entire enemy team predicts. We then all arrive at lane after the first creep wave has already died.

0:50: My axe offlane partner has skilled battle hunger level 1, but it’s never too early to get kills. He insists we go in vs Jugg / shaman, only to get immediately shacked and killed by spin. *ping, *ping, “No powershot? noob WR” says Axe, despite both enemies being at 80% health. Everyone knows WR can only powershot if the enemy has <100hp, otherwise the skill doesn’t work. I buy all the observers, because I’m a good support, but those sentries are a bit pricey for my taste. I’ll leave those to the pos 5.

5:45: I rotate towards mid to help my storm with the rune. He is losing mid to OD who has had him in prison since this game started. I hit OD with a ~270 damage power shot - ok, I think to myself, that should help my storm win lane. Meanwhile, axe is dead again, and I see 4 rapid pings on my hero. “Wr noob, please pull”. I ignore him because pro pos 4s rotate all over the map. It’s the offlane, not the safelane.

12:37: I’ve been making plays and have secured 2 kills as a good WR does, but the score is 3-14. All of our tier 1 towers have fallen and the enemy legion has +90 duel damage vs our safe lane void who is now farming one large camp every 2 minutes with brown boots, quelling and a naked mask. “GG” I see in teamchat. I felt a bit guilty about building maestrom at the start, but now I see I am the only hope. I buy my javelin.

18:42: The enemy team is not showing on the map, but we have decent vision in our triangle. Our void is dueled once again alone in the safelane and dies. He then frantically pings “no vision gg supports”. I message our team to smoke and try to make a play. We smoke into the enemy jungle and find SS warding. Storm jumps immediately and we chase him to the enemy tier 2, only to find the rest of the enemy team. We all die but at least we got shadow shaman. I die for the first time and check my KDA, 4-1. “Ok I’m positive, that’s all that matters”. I check teamchat and I see

"Axe: > WR will respawn in 38 seconds

Axe: > WR will respawn in 37 seconds"

Finally, my axe is communicating that my team shouldn’t go in when I am dead, I thought it would be obvious, but I realize not everyone is as good as me. I ping his death timer too so my team knows not to go in before Axe respawns.

28:33: Hope is nearly gone as the enemy sieges high ground. Our carry is split pushing our jungle, and our axe finally has blink blademail. Our carry pings him to go in, but he doesn’t need any convincing. He jumps their hard carry with aegis, and it looks like he is winning until the blademail runs out and he is melted. Our axe pings “report wr, useless noob”. I check the score, and I am 5-2 while my axe is 3-8. I clearly have had more game impact so I shrug off his comments knowing that its my team that is holding me back.

Being a pos 4 is paradise.
