Around a month ago, my brother’s bike was stolen from Brahma Sarovar in Kurukshetra, Haryana.
We filed an FIR and didn’t have much hope it would be recovered.
To our surprise, about a month later, we got a call that the bike was found - in Karnal.
Here’s where it gets shady: The policeman who contacted us said we needed to pay ₹2500 to get it back. When we asked why, he said:
“1000 is for me, and ₹1500 will be the cost to bring the bike from Karnal to Kurukshetra.”
No receipt. No written notice. Nothing official. Just a casual bribe disguised as a "recovery charge. We ended up paying because we just wanted the bike back and didn’t want more delays. But the whole thing felt wrong. We filed an FIR, the bike was recovered by the police, and yet we still had to pay out of pocket - to the people who are supposed to protect us. Just posting here to ask:
Is this normal?
Are we supposed to just accept this kind of petty corruption?
What could we have done differently?
Has anyone else in Haryana or other states faced som 'ng similar?
