So we now know we are going to Castora, and the inquest will be a major antagonist. I think Castora and the Inquest will be a plot device in the first content patch to get us to Xotecha, a city tied to the human Gods from the canceled GW1 Utopia expansion.
Let’s start with the inquest. We have seen them on several islands up to this point. Notably Sandswept Isles and Orr. I think they are searching not for Castora, but for something ON Castora. The location to something. A portal to Xotecha. When we saw the inquest in Orr we just assumed they were researching dragon magic like in other areas of the game, but I don’t think that was the case.
I think Castora and Xotecha are tied to Orr. The concept art for Xotecha was a sort of clockwork city made of gears. Where do we see large, gear like structures? Orr, the kingdom most closely associated with the human Gods. What do we see in the screenshots from the blog post? A big circular arch that looks remarkably similar to Orrian architecture.
Now let’s get to the name of the expansion. Visions of Eternity. Where have we heard Eternity before? The Crucible of Eternity, the Inquest dungeon. Eternity is also a strong allusion to Xotecha, a place where time has no meaning. An eternal place.
So here’s what I think is happening. The inquest have been searching in Orr for the location of Castora. Castora is a mythical island that holds the entrance to Xotecha. The Orrians either were or maybe still are in some capacity, the caretakers of that portal hence the Orrian architecture on the island. Maybe the Inquest thought the sandswept isles was a possible candidate for Castora, which they learned about in their time in Orr. Maybe we will meet some living decendants of the Orrians on Castora, and we will fail to stop the Inquest from opening the portal to Xotecha, and have to follow them through the portal in the last patch.
I think this whole expansion is a love letter to GW1 and the players. It’s the fan service expansion. What better way to do that then to reimagine the canceled GW1 expansion with a fresh coat of paint.
