I work at an international company and a while ago during lunch we were talking about names that are common in our countries. Someone goes:

“Hey Luigi, isn’t Giovanni a popular name in Italy?”

Luigi, our Italian colleague, says:

“No, never heard of it.”

We all kind of pause, surprised. But I mean, he’s the Italian at the table. Who are we to argue.

A bit later, someone presses him again.

“Really? I know so many Italians named Giovanni. It must be common right?”

Luigi insists,

“Nope. Not a name I know.”

There’s some mild squabbling. Then Luigi goes:

“Aaaaahhh… Giovanni.”

(Same name just pronounced slightly differently)

And without missing a beat:

“Yes, yes. Very common name. My dad is called Giovanni.”
