The WA Government has rejected expert advice to list Baudin’s Black-Cockatoo as Critically Endangered despite clear scientific evidence showing a 90% population decline. This decision undermines conservation efforts by blocking stronger legal protections that would be triggered by a CR listing.

BirdLife has put together a good document summary which explains what this decision means, and the impacts on the Baudin’s Black Cockatoos :BirdLife WA Press Release Baudin’s CR Upgrade 20250717.pdf - Google Drive

If you want to make a difference for the Black Cockatoos, consider making a submission to the EPA on Alcoa’s plans to clear 11,500 hectares of Northern Jarrah Forest.

You can find the submission guide here: Make a submission - WA Forest Alliance

Submissions can be made until August 21st, 2025.

If you can’t make a submission, you can sign WAFA’s submission to the EPA.  A link for this is here: Add your voice – Tell the EPA to reject Alcoa’s forest mining plans | End Forest Mining Forever
