I’ve been looking into upgrading my single 4tb external drive to at least a 2 or 4 bays and started down a rabbit hole and I’m confused on all the options out there.

There is Synology, unRaid and TrueNas and I’m trying to figure out which one makes the most sense for me.

It seems like Synology is more of an appliance as the hardware and software are bundled as one whereas unRAID is more of a software solution? Is that correct? Does that mean any enclosure will work with unRaid?

How does unRAID compare to something like Ubuntu? I run Plex and a bunch of other containers on my mini pc and curious if my NAS server would replace all of that or just add to it? Like can I just plug it into my PC and mount it like an external drive? Why is a whole OS needed?

Do people typically run applications on the NAS or do they use a dedicated machine?

Thanks
