The Netherlands is paying 500 million euros for a support package including American air defense systems, ammunition, and other military equipment for Ukraine. This amount is in addition to the 3.5 billion euros previously pledged to Ukraine.

With this contribution, the Netherlands is the first country to purchase a support package for the so-called Priority Ukraine Requirements List (PURL), a list on which Ukraine specifies which air defense systems, ammunition, and other items it needs most urgently. The list was conceived by U.S. President Trump and NATO chief Rutte to ensure that it is not the U.S. but NATO member states that pay for the deliveries to Ukraine.

Many NATO member states do not have enough weapons themselves to supply Ukraine. They can now purchase a package of the requested equipment from the U.S. for 500 million euros and have it delivered to Ukraine. The aim is for two more support packages to head to Ukraine later this month.

Patriot system is of great importance

The Dutch package includes components for the Patriot and HAWK air defense systems. Ukraine is eagerly awaiting these to defend itself against increasingly heavy Russian air attacks. The U.S. is the only country that can produce the Patriot systems, which cost over 1 billion euros each.

In recent weeks, NATO countries have negotiated how the systems can be delivered to Ukraine. Germany announced last week that it would give two of its own Patriot systems to Ukraine. In return, the U.S. will accelerate delivery of new replacement systems to Germany.
