I know this has been discussed before, but I’m honestly getting close to cancelling Spotify and picking another service that doesn’t have this problem.
It used to be the case that Spotify had tons of curated playlists for different genres, eras, anything you can think of. Nowadays, everything is “Made for You,” which is great if you want an AI-assisted playlist of songs you know you’ll enjoy. But if I want to listen to a specific genre or era in order to find songs I don’t listen to often, or discover something I haven’t heard before, I want a curated playlist – not something that’s already conforming to my preferences. I already submitted this as an idea about a year ago and a decent number of people seem to agree with me.
(I can provide the link to the idea page on the Spotify Community site so folks can upvote it, if that’s allowed per the rules of the sub. Edit: To be clear, what I’m going for here is not at all about self promotion or asking for votes on another site. But I do think that if folks here agree with the changes I think Spotify should be making, voicing that on the Spotify Community ideas page could be helpful in making that change.)
An example of this: The Spotify playlists called Alternative 90s and Alternative 80s are “Made for” me, so they seem to be filled with songs I’ve heard over and over. However, Alternative 70s and Alternative 60s are standard Spotify playlists, curated for everyone. That’s what I want sometimes. Not a mix, not my weekly Discover playlist, a playlist that will show me iconic songs from a particular genre or era that I haven’t listened to as much.
I would love to know if y’all have any ideas for workarounds:
- How do you find playlists that don’t keep you in a bubble of your own preferences on Spotify?
- Is there another streaming service that does this better than Spotify currently?
- Or, to really go out on a limb, am I thinking about this the wrong way and I should be trying a completely new approach to my music listening/discovery?
