I work in a grocery store as a cashier. As we all know, that entails talking to customers. Now, typically conversations are simple “how are you today” kinds of things, but this one customer in particular had a really weird topic.

This old man came in and he was a regular. He came through my till and the conversation started out like normal. After a little while of scanning his groceries, he asks me, “So, how is your man treating you?”

I looked up at him, kind of confused, and said, “Oh. I don’t have one.”

I don’t know why it was so shocking to him, but he gaped at me and exasperated, “what?! A nice, young girl like you doesn’t have a boyfriend?!”

I briefly explained that my last relationship wasn’t the best and that I was just going to wait a while. He then proceeded to go on what felt like a twenty minute rant about how men should respect and care for their women and children and not hurt them. Because I had other customers waiting, I tried to politely get through the conversation and move on. However, even after I finished his order and started on the next ones, he continued talking.

Finally, he reached the end of his spiel and told me to have a good day. I said the same to him and he left. I haven’t seen him since then, but it’s definitely the most unforgettable conversation.
