First of all, my setup :
Laser 650 nm (from a red dot laser)
surface was a flat plastic shiny surface
I used a circular polariser. That cancels out 99% of the laser light when in the right position.
The effect was most prominent when the maser was almost completely suppressed by the polariser.
camera : Canon EOS RP, lens EF 90mm 2.8L TS/E Macro
First I focussed on the table (i put a paper clip to focus on)
Then I focussed ‘beyond’ the table, through the table, and that’s when the effect was visible. video is lower resolution than the pictures so it doesn’t show that well.
After the filming I took some photographs in RAW format and processed them , and a kind of ‘lines’ and ‘crystal like icons’ begin to emerge.
No, it’s not JPEG artifacts, these are RAWS file, never converted to JPEG. (video 2)
I will do some more experiments with this setup and also with a green laser.
VIDEO1 : this is where I open the file in camera RAW and show the edits.
VIDEO 2 : this is where I open the file in Photoshop to zoom in. Here you see the ‘crystals or icons’ when zoomed in. (no JPEG artifacts because it’s a 16bit TIFF file)
VIDEO 3 ; this is the video file where I put the polariser in the laser beam, and finally focus beyond the focal point, inside the table.
