TW abortion and gun control
An acquaintance of mine recently posted on Facebook “no uterus, no opinion on abortion. Fair enough. No gun, no opinion on gun rights” and dude, that pissed me off in a way I cannot articulate. I was going to reply on his post, but decided against it because it’d be like screaming into the wind. That and I really don’t want to get into an argument on Facebook. So I’m going to post my response here. Enjoy.
You know that’s comparing apples to oranges right? Your opinion on abortion directly effects my body. And your opinion on guns directly impacts my child’s safety. There’s a big difference. One is an attempt to control women and subjugate them to unfair or dangerous circumstances (feel free to tell me having an abusers rpe baby isn’t dangerous, not to mention ectopic pregnancies, miscarriages, and all other potentially life threatening complications that can arise during a pregnancy). The other is an attempt to make the country safer for our children and adults too. School shootings are the most publicized. But did you know “At least 895 children aged 5 and under have managed to find a gun and unintentionally shoot themselves or someone else from 2015 to 2022” -taken from a CBScom article. Tell me more about how my opinion on guns puts others in danger. Also, ANYONE can get a gun. Only half the population can be forced into pregnancy. If you think that women aren’t forced into pregnancy then you need a wake up call. Your opinion on abortion should not dictate what I can and cannot do with my body. Your opinion on abortion should not put my life at risk (and an abortion ban does just that. Look at how many women have died due to child birth/pregnancy complications “Maternal death rates 62% higher in abortion-restriction states”- taken from a CNN article And that doesn’t take into account the disparity between white women and women of color). Did you know that there are now maternity care deserts? I assume you’re familiar with food deserts. Same concept but for pregnancy. Which can be just as life threatening as starvation/malnutrition. Gun control literally makes everyone safer. Apples and oranges my friend. This is not a valid argument/statement/point you were trying to make.
And for the record I have both a gun and a uterus. Abortion is health care. Guns are a right, yes. If you’d like we can debate that too, comparing the guns that were around when the constitution was formed vs the guns that exist now. The right to bear arms is in place so that the government cannot disarm us, it’s supposed to be a safeguard against tyranny (look how well thats working). The right to bear arms does not supersede my right to live, or my child’s right to live. And don’t come at me with that bullshit of “the fetus has a right to life” because that’s bullshit 1) it’s commonly accepted that brain activity indicates life. Any comatose patient can be taken off life support once brain activity has either stopped or is minimal. Full brain activity in the fetus doesn’t start til the end of the second trimester () 2) let’s talk about organ donors real quick. If you’re not an organ donor, you can’t be forced to donate after death, even if it saves someone else’s life. You can’t even be forced to give BLOOD while you’re alive…But if you’re alive and pregnant, you have to surrender control of your organs? You have to give up your bodily autonomy, your energy, and potentially your livelihood! What? Many abortion bans include bans even when the mother’s life is at risk. Tell me again how abortion bans aren’t dangerous. Feel free to argue with me that a fetus has more of a right to live than the person who’s carrying it. This is an asinine argument that you’re trying to make.
Thank you twoxchromosomes for reading my rant.
