I (F21) started going to a new gym and it’s more geared towards bodybuilding than general fitness. Alot of the people there seem to know each other and there’s a bit of community at this gym compared to regular ones like pf. Because it’s a bodybuilding gym about 80% of the members are men and I’ve been struggling to use the free weights because i feel like im not wanted there. I know it’s probably all in my head but I get paranoid that when I’m looked at especially if I can snag a bench during rush hour. My last gym was for beginners and there were people of all sizes so I felt more welcomed. I chose this gym on purpose tho cause I plan on competing someday.

This morning I was on the lat pull down machine and in between sets this man goes “can I give you some advice, you don’t need to go so slow on your sets it’s just wasting energy.” That’s the first person that’s talked to me since I joined last week so I just smiled and said ok thx. I’ve been working out religiously since quarantine so I’m not new to it or anything. It’s partially social anxiety or maybe just too much caffeine before I show up but I don’t feel welcomed here even by the women. Anyone have any tips on how to make gym friends?
