My company recently told me I have to clean the work vehicle on my own time, without pay. I work the trades, multiple people work out of my truck. When I clean it I’m cleaning out other people’s shit. Also, the truck isn’t new. It was dirty when I got it, and I still find trash from the old guy.
Also, they don’t pay me to drive it to jobsites. I recently learned that if I get in an accident and I’m “off the clock” I’m liable. I live 20mins from the shop. They scheduled me somewhere 1.5 hours away all week. That’s +2 hours of extra drive time a day. In a company vehicle. Off the clock.
This is illegal right?
I’m tempted to just tell them I can’t bring the van home anymore. If they need me for on call work, I’ll drive to the shop and hop in the van.
All the extra work and liability makes me very uncomfortable.
What’s worse is I’m under contract for another year, I’m afraid they’ll fire me and I’ll owe them a bunch of money.
I live in Maine, USA. For context
