I didn’t get into bionicle until the 2007 wave and I really liked those sets and thought they were cool, but I remember looking at the bionicle story website and being fascinated by the earlier set designs that weren’t on shelves anymore, specifically the 2001 sets. They looked a lot more alien and mechanical than what the series ultimately became, and I think that added a certain mystique to those early sets that gets lost once they all have relatively human proportions. The later sets are cool, don’t get me wrong, but I just think the early sets really evoke a character from a world you want to learn more about and explore. Honestly I think you even lose something when they move to uniform hand designs for the toa nuva.
