I’m treating myself to a staycation this week and we are in the midst of a late summer heat, wave so I’ve been going to various local swimming holes to hammock and read and swim every afternoon. Today I decided to go to my local town lake, a beach that is lovely but often very crowded with young children and large groups.

To my surprise, I pulled up to a nearly deserted parking lot. What luck! It wasn’t until I set up my hammock that I realized the only other people here were other women. There was a teenager reading a book at a picnic table. And older woman waist deep in the clear blue water. Another older woman in a baseball cap basking in the sun on the sand stands up and begins to wade out, splashing with each step. I hear them introduce themselves to each other and chat about the heat. Farther down, a woman in a straw hat stands at a picnic table talking on the phone.

I lay in my hammock in the shade and listened to the small talk between the two women in the water. One of the most peaceful moments I’ve had in a long time.
