Ever since starting college and having to make new friends again i’ve realized that all of the social rules i have lined up in my head as “how to have a proper human interaction” are not rules literally anyone else follows and it’s becoming frustrating.

For example, i’ve determined up until now that the normal way to have a conversation/make small talk with a new person is to ask questions to get to know them and then they will ask me the same questions back. I will never be asked a question and not ask it back.

Ie; “What’s your favorite movie?” “[Insert answer], what’s yours?” And then I answer.

Not a single person i’ve spoken to in the past few weeks has reciprocated or done any of the things i think are right 😭😭😭 I can’t tell if no one wants to talk to me and im simply not reading it or if i don’t know how small talk works like i thought i did.
