So, I’m a huge fan of Toni Collette. And when I hear there’s a new show or movie she’s in, I’m gonna check it out. Turns out, this whole show is created by comedian Mae Martin who’s self-proclaimed non-binary trans and low doses testosterone. And, they star in the show as the new cop in town. Now, I’d normally just pay no mind to this as I’ve watched plenty of shows that had their token non-binary character and the usual pronoun introduction. But he’s playing as a trans man. And boy is it…not great.
I’m not even done with the show yet and there’s been several times I’ve had to just pause to let myself sigh. In the first episode alone he’s talking about how he has no facial hair and how he should “up his dosage” (yeah, that’s how it works!). In another episode a young girl immediately clocks him and tells him (not an exact quote), “Most queer people get out of small towns” a pause “Oh don’t worry I’m bi!” (awesome, let it be known it’s fine to clock us and call us queer as long as you’re also LBG). In another scene two girls are talking about him being a cop, “Most cops just swing their dicks around” - “I don’t think he has a dick” (should’ve inserted a laugh track here cause it’s just so damn funny guys! trans men have no penis, get it?!) And for the grand slam we have a sex scene where his pregnant wife finger bangs him on the floor while he’s on his stomach. I swear, this show wouldn’t piss me off nearly as bad as if they would’ve just made his character a non-binary whatever or just made the couple a lesbian couple (which is what I initially thought when I first started watching it).
I’m sticking it out, literally only for Toni Collette but this shit is getting old. I’m tired of non-binary people thinking they should get to be the spokesperson for transsexuals, that they should get to represent us when they know jack shit about us or our condition and just further spread harmful misinformation about us. And most of these “jokes” at the trans guys expense would easily be labeled transphobic if they were coming from a cissexual creator, but since it’s a non-binary it’s all good. I always remind myself that the only upside to this kind of representation is that people don’t ever assume transsexual men actually pass, and as such it helps us better assimilate and blend in as men. I won’t ever get lumped in with the likes of this person because I look and move throughout my life as a man. I’m not needing to constantly tell people I’m a man, or explain who I am. But it is still aggravating to see those who do not have the same condition as we do turn our suffering into one big joke.
