I have been playing racing games for over 25 years now, all kinds really, and on all platforms.
My feeling (with a mix of sadness / disappointment) is that, with time, despite crazy technological advancements, we basically went towards having just mega graphics but less realistic damage models (take out the usual bunch of games, Beam.NG / Wreckfest and few others).
How do you feel about that?
Personally, as much as I like the level of photorealism / driving physics we are reaching, it’s quite of a let down to see beautiful cars launched against a wall 300 km/h with little to no scratch, or rolling unrealistically for 50 meters and barely having any deformation, to the point it kills the vibe really.
Yeah, maybe car manufacturers didn’t bother having their vehicles smashed back then but, again… Why? Why caring so much?
Many games I played in my childhood / teenage years look better from this perspective than the newest ones developed with exponentially more possibilities.
Do you think it’s because people don’t care?
Maybe too much of a cost nowadays to implement such kind of stuff?
I’d be happy to hear your thoughts on that.
