My brother died in 1980 at age 12, accidental drowning. This is story #2 of his haunting of the family.

My father was an electrician, trained in the navy. When he retired, we moved back to my parents home state and they bought a double wide trailer on a 1/2 acre plot of land. Three bedrooms, two baths, six kids.

My dad was able to purchase and renovate a single wide and attach it to the existing trailer. Five bedrooms, three baths, a large family room, an extra large kitchen with an old fashioned cooking wood stove. Lots of space in our triple wide home. We had been living there for 5 years when my brother passed away.

One day, the electricity went out in half the house. Actually, half of each section of the house. Not lengthwise as that would make sense, right? The bedrooms and bathrooms were all on the same ends of each section and had power. Living room, dining room, kitchen, family room, no power at all.

My dad, being an electrician, turned off all electronics and light switches so that when he found and fixed the problem, the power wouldn’t surge and damage electronics.

He spent two weeks under the house. Checked all wires, fuses, electrical boxes, everything. He had his electrician friends come over and help. They could not find the issue. He was ready to completely rewire the entire house.

One night during dinner, as we all sat in the darkening room, eating what mom cooked on the wood stove, the power came back on. All the lights came on, the TV was blaring, and the stereo was at full volume playing Rod Stewart’s ‘Do you think I’m sexy’.

Dad sat there red faced, jaw muscles working, veins extended on his neck. He was big mad!! My sister and I started giggling, then mom joined us. Pretty soon we were all laughing, even dad. My brother was a prankster!
