I knew raising a girl would be difficult, but that one just got me in the gut because I knew this was just the start of tricky relationship navigation. I reiterated to her that people who like her do not and should not hit her; she owes no one friendship or a relationship; and consent is critical. That I will also be teaching that to her little brothers.
We lucked out in pre-school and kindergarten—the boys in her class were respectful and kind. She is still friends with many of them, but they’re all in different classes now.
She’s strong and I know she will stand up for herself. I told her I was proud that she told me about it and didn’t keep it a secret. I spoke to the bus driver and monitor this morning, and they’ll keep a closer eye on things.
But I’m still cursing under my breath.
