So, my youngest son got hit by a car on Thursday.
My wife was at home, the neighbours came rushing out of their houses when they heard the commotion, helped manage traffic, called an ambulance, and assisted my wife with my kid. (I should add that my wife is not a native English speaker, so calling an ambulance in the middle of this stressful situation would have been difficult).
I was at work when all this happened, after getting a call from my wife, I rushed home to find the police still on-site with the driver, who seemed really sorry.
After talking with the police officer who took the details of everyone (really nice guy by the way), I made my way to the hospital.
Having heard all kinds of stories about the children’s hospital, I was expecting the worst.
Couldn’t have been more wrong! From the get go all the staff were really friendly and helpful. They did whatever they could to make our time there easier.
Everyone from the cleaners, the nurses and doctors were really professional.
I feel like we hear a lot of horror stories about the Australian health system, but to have facilities like the children’s hospital be accessible, and basically free if you have a Medicare card is crazy!! I know, we pay for it through our taxes, but an adventure like this in the US would have set us back dozens of thousands of dollars!
Honestly, after all this I feel really lucky to call Australia, and in particular Perth home.
Love this place to bits!!
Ps, my son is ok, he was discharged yesterday and he’ll be taking it easy at home.
