⚠️ Trigger warning: This story contains graphic descriptions of suicide.
A guy from a village recently died by suicide and here’s what I know about his life and what happened.
He was from a small village, He studied only until 8th grade and started working in a factory about 15 years ago but the factory got shut so he did casual labor, like masonry and other coolie-type work. Growing up, he was a quiet kid, always keeping to himself. They had a small home in the village, which I visited last year. It’s tiny, just a living room with an old TV. When I visited, he was lying on the floor. His dad was bedridden in another room and died a few months later.
After that, it was just him and his mom in the house. At some point, he kicked his mom out, and she went to live with her married daughter.
He had a few friends who, according to people in the village, led him down a bad path. They did drugs, drank alcohol, gambled, and often came home at 1-2am. One day, he stole about 10k rupees from a relative/neighbor’s house. No one reported it because there was no proof, but everyone knew.
Then, about three weeks ago, he stole something small, worth around 300-500 rupees, from a small temple/Stana as we call it. When confronted by a respected village elder, he apologized and promised to return it that night. The elder told everyone it was okay and speculated that he might have intended to steal something much bigger, seeing the small item as a sort of “protection” or blessing from God before attempting a bigger theft.
However, three other people in the village filed a police complaint. He became extremely depressed as everyone now knew what had happened. He apparently took it very seriously and ended up hanging himself in a dense forest.
For 10-15 days, nobody knew where he was, and everyone thought he had run away. One morning, a local woman stumbled upon him hanging in the forest. She was drunk and didn’t report it at all, showing complete negligence. Later that evening, she returned and fully realized what had happened. His face had decomposed completely, leaving only the skull visible. His body was covered with clothes, and his hands were just bones. The only way they identified him was through a bracelet he was wearing.
The police, a few villagers, and a government team arrived around 3am to conduct a post-mortem. Images weren’t allowed, but apparently someone managed to record a video. From what I saw, his neck appeared twisted, likely from when he climbed up, tied the rope around his neck at the top of the tree, and jumped.
TL;DR: A quiet man from a small village, struggled with bad influences, family issues, and minor thefts. After a small theft from a local shrine became known and a police complaint was filed, he became depressed and hanged himself in a dense forest. A drunk local woman saw him first but didn’t report it, and his body was later identified by a bracelet.
