TLDR: My councilor was better organized, had better (in my opinion) best practices, was more supportive, and was actually was going door to door.

Volunteering for a federal party this cycle honestly sucked. I stopped helping pretty quickly and focused on Fairvote Canada door hangars because it was so bad. My expectations were pretty low for this election as I figured municipal would be even worse. I had the opposite experience, despite having less resources it felt better organized and was much more enjoyable. The candidate was almost always there with the group. There was no photo ops or cringe speeches. There were a lot of things that I thought were unproductive time waster activities or actions with the federal door knocking that weren’t an issue with my councilor. The support tracking system is also much more reasonable and didn’t make me feel like things were being inflated.

Going door to door is also much easier, people seem less heated on average but also much more undecided which is a mixed bag. It’s nice being able to win people over and go from a ‘meh maybe I’ll vote’ to ‘yes I’ll take a yard sign’ whereas with federal people seem much more stubborn.

One shocking thing for me was that I encountered 2 people who had PACE signs who didn’t seem to really care about PACE or the candidate. Someone just came around and asked if they would take a sign and said that their neighbors were getting some. I don’t think folks would be that permissive with federal parties.

Bike lanes came up a few times and it’s pretty funny when people are confronted with someone who bikes year round. All of the dumb social media talking points melt right before their eyes. It’s usually the reactionary type so talking about self discipline, resilience and financial responsibility usually shuts down any excuses they have for themselves or others.

I’m curious if others have found the same thing regarding the different levels of govt and volunteering.
