Hello Wubby,

I have been in the criminal justice field for many years and am a certified crime and intelligence analyst. I do not claim to know everything about the police’s job, but I feel like I have a pretty good grasp of what goes on as I talk to officers and work with them daily. That being said, I have a few thoughts and recommendations.

Burglaries in Vegas hotel rooms:

These are a well known crime that occurs daily. They can be crimes of opportunity (ex: a door was left open), but there are random people who case out and target rooms. It’s doesn’t matter what you look like, they know it’s a penthouse. There are most likely going to be items of value. You yourself said it’s a cakewalk to get in. That will also be known to prolific criminals. They know how to get into every door in every casino. The people who have jobs or skin in the game have too much to lose for 10k. A burglar does not.

Security pulling footage for you:

Different properties will have different policies. They are probably right by saying they will not pull the footage without the police. Think about how many irresponsible/drunk Andy’s that harass them for footage about a night they can’t remember. Not saying this happened to you, but it is certainly a reason of why they may not get it for anyone who claims something happened to them when it could have been their own doing.

When security would not help you:

That’s when you should have went STRAIGHT to the police. I understand your reservations and wanting to find another solution, but the police is what will kick security in gear. Time is now of the essence. That chatter is right that cctv footage will expire. You do not have a month to go back. I would guess you have a week or two at best. It is possible they hold it for longer, but I wouldn’t bet on it.

After, then you could still make calls to people like Airbnb or the business owner to try other methods.

Contacting the police:

It is incredibly frustrating that you cannot file a report online. Some other smaller agencies would let you, but with the sheer volume of crime Las Vegas deals with daily, it makes sense that they want you to be there in person.

Killing the vibes?

Yes, putting everything on hold would kill the vibes for the weekend, but you said it yourself. This is a felony and a lot of money was stolen. Time is of the essence. You need to do as much as possible, as soon as possible, to achieve the best possible result.

This is not an excuse for the security guard for not throwing you a bone and helping out. This is not an excuse for the police not being properly staffed. And hindsight is always 20/20. However if you really want to peruse this like you said you want to, then you need to get back to Vegas ASAP.

TLDR: These crimes are common by random criminals in Vegas. Wubby needs to get back to Vegas and file a report ASAP if he wants a chance at a better result.
