I have something to say. I wait for an appropriate moment to speak.

The conversation keeps flowing. No gaps. People somehow know when to jump in. They interrupt each other smoothly and it’s apparently fine?

I wait for a pause. By the time there’s a pause, the topic has changed. My comment is now irrelevant.

Or I try to jump in like everyone else does. I misjudge the timing. I interrupt at the wrong moment. Everyone goes quiet and looks at me. I’ve violated some rule I don’t understand.

So I mostly just listen. Then later people ask why I was so quiet.

Because group conversations have social rhythms I cannot perceive. Everyone else is dancing to music I can’t hear.

One-on-one? I’m fine. Group settings? I’m a spectator.

Does anyone else feel completely lost in group conversations?
