Rather than replacing my aging garage motor with a new smart one ($800AUD quote + installation, plus $80AUD per remote), I used a SwitchBot + door sensor and a custom 3D-printed mount to automate it through Home Assistant.
The SwitchBot presses the original remote button, which sits inside a printed snap-fit holster on the wall.
Works perfectly, and the remote can be removed anytime for manual use.
The only downsides are:
- The door takes a few seconds longer to open
- Switchbot battery will eventually die, but I’ve got a bunch of spares ready to go
Total cost: around $80AUD for a smart retrofit that beats replacing the motor.

Edit: regarding why I didn’t go with RATGDO, I mentioned it in this comment below.
(TL;DR: cost, lack of wiring knowledge and unsure if it would even work)
