I’m a long time 50 y.o. casual player, Protoss main. SC1 & SC2 have been my go-to games when I get some free time for decades now. The highest I’ve ever finished in 1v1 ladder was Diamond Tier 1, #1, (leagues locked) and Master in 2v2 with other Diamond or Master players as my teammates. I last finished Platinum on both off-races.
I’ve never been big into watching Twitch streams, YouTube videos, reading strategies, watching other people play, etc. For me, playing is fun, and watching or reading is boring. And when the championships are on, if I’m even aware of it, I’m happier playing my own Diamond-level game than watching pros play. Add to it the fact I never really had the time to devote to be a serious player/streamer (the leagues always locked before I had enough free time to play enough to move up significantly), and Diamond is where I’ve plateaued. In fact, I didn’t get to Diamond league until I retired from my military career because I finally had more time to devote than a few games a week and the seasons weren’t interrupted by deployments and training exercises anymore.
So I’m wondering if I took it seriously, had a coach, was willing to adapt to new strategies, learned current costs, points, build times, counters, hotkeys etc. (I learned them once, then gave up after a few balance changes), could I make it from a high diamond to a regular Master, maybe even GM? I think I could… and if so, where do I start? Who is providing GM-level coaching?
