I found this article and I thought I make a post about it. I have never seen Meatsleep talked about on here before. It’s interesting topic about horror videos on YouTube and why trying to do found footage on the platform can lead to bad outcomes.

Meatsleep was an ARG uploaded to YouTube from 2014 to 2016. It was mostly cryptic and disturbing videos hinting at the channel being run by some cannibalistic serial killer. The videos got popular on 4chan’s /x/ board and quickly spread throughout the Internet. YouTube ARG analysis channels like Night Mind and Scare Theater would make videos on it.

Now Meatsleep was an ARG, and entirely fictional. But some people became convinced it was real. This especially happened when they uploaded the video Walk in the Park, which seems to depict an actual crime scene (According to some of the comments on it, it seems like it was archival footage of a new report of a murder in Canada from the 1990’s).

Many people now thought Meatsleep was an actual serial killer and began to treat the whole thing like a real crime spree. According to this article, Meatsleep became a target of Anonymous, and was also reported to the FBI. Apparently people who had nothing to do with the group were falsely identified as being behind the channel and doxxed.

Meatsleep would end with the video No More, where it was explained that it was an ARG run by a group of people all over the world over Skype, where they would make decisions on the narrative using a dice roll. The video also denounced the harassment the group and innocent bystanders received, and they decided to stop the ARG because of it. Later, they would answer more questions about the series in an AMA.

Sadly, it was later announced that one of the primary creators of Meatsleep who went by the alias Bone passed away in 2021. No cause of death given.

I never really followed Meatsleep closely but I heard of it when it was still ongoing. Is there anyone here who followed it while it was still ongoing have more details about the harassment and doxxing that lead it to being shut down?
