I watched “The Killing of a Sacred Deer” today and if I had to describe it in just one word that word would be “unsettling”. Collin Farrell plays a cardiovascular surgeon who meets someone connected to his past. Once his family starts falling ill, he learns that he must make a heartbreaking and gruesome decision. The pacing of this movie feels like something out of a nightmare. Everything starts off already feeling weird but the creepiness just builds and builds until it reaches its climax and you’re just left speechless. The highlight of this movie for me was Barry Keoghan’s performance. He’s legitimately terrifying in this movie and needs to be seen to be believed. This movie’s cinematography is also gorgeous and gives the film a nice, artsy polish. “The Killing of a Sacred Deer” is a bit of a slow-burn but if you stick around long enough, the payoff is absolutely worth it.
Fun fact, the title of this film comes from part of the story of the ancient Greek tragedy Iphigenia in Aulis by Euripides.
